What’s the Difference Between Therapy & Coaching?

The answer to this question is a little different for everyone you ask, but here’s what it boils down to: When you're seeking out a life coach, you're overall pretty stable (i.e. no major current mental health concerns), but in some ways, you feel stuck or you’re wanting to work toward some specific goals. Many therapists also include coaching within their therapy work, but coaching is not appropriate for clients who are in more acute mental health distress, unless they are working with a therapist in addition to coaching.

Also, unlike therapy in which mental health providers are usually restricted by their license to work with clients only in their own state, life coaching is accessible to clients anywhere who are an appropriate fit. Some therapists will offer both coaching and therapy, depending on what’s most appropriate for each client’s needs.
